Award-winning Design
"We
do not want a brick box!" Hammel, Green and Abrahamson - Becketwood's
architects - were told. What they produced was, in fact, solid
brick, but about as far from a "box" as it could possibly be.
The sprawling 210-unit Tudor complex, which so ingeniously
integrates fourteen unique floor plans emanating from the spreading
branches of its hallways, has won an award for site development
as well as an environmental award. It also has received a "Best
Overall Value" award from the Metropolitan Council.
The units include a wide variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from 550 to over 1600 square feet. Some units have balconies, while others may have bay windows, fireplaces, or even vaulted ceilings. Owners have the freedom to remodel their units - even to the extent of sometimes removing a wall to combine two rooms. Many members comment about how quiet they find their homes - in large part due to the solid brick and concrete construction - increasingly rare among newer cooperatives.
On the campus is a beautiful stone Chapel, now used for ecumenical services planned by Becketwood Members. The Chapel undercroft - a walkout lower level - is now Kensington Square, a fully equipped party room. Tables with umbrellas for "al fresco" use in warm weather are just outside on the patio.
Among the built-in amenities of the main building are:
- heated underground parking
- another fully-equipped party room available to members free of charge
- a large professionally-catalogued library as well as a paperback "book nook."
- a well-equipped fitness room
- a complete woodworking shop
- a craft room
- a hair salon
- a game room
- a pantry with food supplies available 24/7
- a coffee area for socializing
- sprinkler system throughout, with 2-hour fire walls between units.
